How is the Remote First Aid Course Structured? 

The Remote First Aid course will be delivered by certified trainers who are highly educated and trained. You’ll receive the same quality, hands-on approach to course delivery, with the real-to-life knowledge and training that all FirstAidPro courses have come to be recognised for.

In order to successfully complete the course, you must complete the workbook and pre-course reading. 

Once you’ve completed registration, your course resources will be delivered to you. This includes the pre-course reading and a knowledge workbook. The workbook will need to be printed and submitted to your instructor, with knowledge questions completed upon commencing your Face-to-Face Training and Assessment.

Enrolled students of Remote First Aid will be measured against a combination of the following competency criteria:

• Emphasising practical, real-world situations through Hands-on Demonstrations –
  Build Wilderness First Aid skills that are both current and relevant to industry standards when providing First Aid in remote or isolated sites. With interactive demonstrations of real-life scenarios in a fun, safe and controlled environment
• Project Completion –
  First hand First Aid training experience navigating and confidence in completing medical emergency incident reporting forms

• Knowledge Assessment –
  Recognised by the ARC, the Fundamental and essential skills necessary to safely provide remote First Aid, isolated site resuscitation and wilderness First Aid skills.

 

USI Requirements

If you wish to complete any vocational training within Australia a USI is now required. A USI (Unique Student Identifier) is unique to you and must be used in registration for VET certifications. If you are unsure as to whether you already have a USI or you need to register for one, just click here. 

Once you have your USI and the online booking is completed you will be given access to a student portal that will contain your confirmation and you will be able to complete your enrolment, student profile and account details. This portal is called Vasto. 

All documentation, including your pre-course work, will be stored here and you will be able to access them at any time you need. Your certificates will also be located here after your Provide First Aid in a remote or isolated site course.

Your HLTAID013 – Provide First Aid in remote or isolated site Statement of Attainment is valid for three (3) years.

The HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation component of the course is only valid for 12 months and will need to be renewed annually.

FirstAidPro Course Requisites

• Participants must be 14 years of age (those who are under 18 must present an enrolment form from a parent or guardian to accept responsibility) 
• Prepare verbal incident reports or provide information to enable preparation of an incident report (e.g. First Aid report)
• Communicate effectively and assertively in an incident (e.g. give a casualty handover)
• Use literacy and numeracy skills for required reading, interpret and apply guidelines and protocols, understand and follow ARC policies and procedures.
• Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of both compression and breaths) on an adult manikin placed on the floor
• Perform at least 2 minutes of interrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of both compression) on an infant manikin placed on the firm surface

Assessment Conditions

The purpose of this training is to help you prepare for the skills and knowledge you need to be an effective rescuer. If you’re looking for a realistic experience, this course will offer it because it’s not just about learning the knowledge- it’s also about practising it. Use realistic CPR manikins and demonstrate compression and ventilation skills following DRSABCD guidelines. Our scenarios concentrate on the significance of remote or isolated site circumstances.

To complete all tasks outlined in the Provide First Aid in remote and isolated site assessment criteria, you must effectively demonstrate fundamental knowledge requirements. 

Including but not limited to, how to safely identify tasks, showing the capacity to follow established guidelines, and managing relevant First Aid contingencies within the context of providing First Aid in remote or isolated sites. 

Remote First Aid preparedness

• Evaluating information about remote or isolated sites and identifying potential injuries and illnesses requiring extended management with specific considerations for alpine, desert, marine, rural or remote settings and tropical environments
• Selecting a First Aid kit and resources to manage a range of potential incidents, according to organisational emergency response and First Aid procedures.
• Selecting communication equipment to facilitate emergency response in remote or isolated sites.
• Preparing First Aid Kits and equipment for a First Aid response in remote or isolated sites.
• Completing pre-departure safety and serviceability checks on equipment.

 

Recognising and assessing emergency situations in remote and isolated environments

• Ensuring safety for self, bystanders and casualties.
• Assessing casualties to determine the extent of necessary First Aid response.
• Identifying the need for medical assistance and relaying initial and concise information.
• Triaging when multiple casualties are involved

 

Applying appropriate First Aid procedures

• Performing single-rescuer or two-rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR in accordance with ARC and DRSABCD guidelines and availability of rescuers.
• Providing First Aid in accordance with established First Aid principles.
• Displaying respectful behaviour towards the casualty.
• Obtaining consent from casualty where possible.
• Using available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible.
• Operating AEDs according to manufacturer instructions. 
• Monitoring the casualty’s condition and respond in accordance with First Aid principles.
• Assessing the need to evacuate casualty, ability to transport to medical assistance or need for external assistance.
• Administering medication as required according to medical instructions.

 

Communicating details of the incident

• Accurately conveying incident details to emergency services.
• Reporting details of incidents in line with appropriate workplace or site procedures.
• Completing applicable workplace or site documentation, including incident report form.
• Maintaining privacy and confidentiality of records and information in line with applicable statutory or organisational policies.

 

Coordinating evacuation efforts and First Aid activities until assistance arrives

• Determining the need, in consultation with external services, to evacuate the casualty.
• Providing accurate information about the location of the incident, number of casualties, their condition and their position to enable deployment of appropriate resources.
• Continuing to provide treatment using available resources until help arrives.
• Preparing site for evacuation of the casualty.
• On approach, assisting emergency services to locate the site of the incident.
• Following instructions and providing assistance to emergency services personnel during evacuation.

 

Reviewing the incident.

• Recognising the possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers and seeking help when required.
• Contributing to the review of a First Aid response as required.

 

Performance Evidence

Simulated, in line with ARC guidelines, the competent management of:

An unconscious and breathing casualty.  

Including: 

• appropriate positioning to reduce the risk of compromising airways.

 

An unconscious, non-breathing adult.

Including:

• Performing at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.
  (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) 
• Performing at least 2 minutes of ventilation and at least 2 minutes of compressions during a two-rescuer procedure on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor
• Following the prompts of an automated external defibrillator, AED, and deliver at least one shock
• Responding appropriately in the event of regurgitation or vomiting
• Demonstrating a rotation of operators with minimal interruptions to compressions

 

An unconscious, non-breathing infant.

Including:

• Performing at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer
  CPR on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface
  (5 cycles both compressions and ventilations)
